How do you respond when facing building friendships in a new place?

It took me a while to name it, but I am dealing with building friendships in a new place. The standard advice sounds simple, but applying it in ordinary life has been more complicated than I expected. Connection often begins with a smaller and less polished invitation than we imagine. I would appreciate hearing what this has looked like in real life for other people.
