What would kindness look like with accepting that recovery is not linear?

Today I caught myself thinking about accepting that recovery is not linear. Some days I can take a useful next step, while on other days simply acknowledging it feels like progress. Healing does not follow a schedule, and difficult moments can return without erasing progress. If you relate, what is one thing you wish others knew about the experience?

Thank you for naming accepting that recovery is not linear. The details may differ for each person, but your post made me feel less alone in it.

I appreciate the honesty here. It is encouraging to see people leave room for different needs, different timelines, and imperfect progress.

Sometimes I tell one trusted person exactly what would helpβ€”listening, company, or a quick check-in later. Being specific takes away some of the guesswork.

One thing that has helped me is planning something gentle around dates or situations I know may be difficult. I keep the goal deliberately small so it feels supportive rather than like another obligation.

My experience has been uneven too. I started noting what happened just before a difficult moment, and over time a few useful patterns became visible.

That is a helpful question. I call a step manageable when I can begin it without needing to feel completely ready first.
